We measure our safety performance using the industry standard DIFR, which is based on 200 000
hours-worked. The DIFR rate includes lost time injuries, noise-induced hearing loss and restricted work
cases where employees may not carry out their normal duties. The group DIFR ended at 0.11 which
was an improvement from the 0.16 of the previous year and is well within the target of 0.35. . The
safety performance statistics listed below and above exclude contractor injuries. However, we record
and investigate all contractor lost-time injuries within our safety reporting systems and actively involve
contractors in all safety-related programmes. During the period under review, a total of 12 contractor
lost-time injuries and one fatality were recorded, compared to 16 lost-time injuries and two fatalities last
year. Illovo employs a total of approximately 10 000 contractor employees.
