4508 employees underwent technical training; 1265 underwent management training; 6907 underwent safety and health
awareness; 21 199 underwent business alignment training and 311 underwent other educational programmes.
Group-wide programmes during the year under review included:
structured formal technical trainee programmes and apprenticeships, with 77 and 104 employees
respectively enrolled in such programmes across the group;
management development programmes, aimed at first-line to upper management, with 76 managers
having completed these;
six-month international experience placements of high potential early and mid-career graduates
across AB Sugar’s businesses took place, with six from Illovo having been deployed in China, Spain
and England, while three from Spain and China experienced development opportunities within Illovo;
a Business Understanding Programme for all employees was undertaken under the theme ‘Taking
Charge of our Business, Together’. Topics covered included the business’s strategies and
consequent expectations of employees in terms of performance and values-driven behaviours in
implementing the strategies; employee success stories; the company’s involvement in the
communities in which we operate; continuous improvement; safety; quality and markets.
concern about the hardships faced by employees across the business caused by unscrupulous
money-lenders, garnishee orders, inadequate retirement planning and a variety of challenges in
managing money led the business to develop a programme to address these needs, which will be
made available group-wide, in the language of employees’ choice. This Financial Education
Programme will be rolled out during the course of the forthcoming financial year and thereafter will be
offered annually or on a voluntary demand basis.
provision of full bursaries to 49 students to further their tertiary education with a view to inclusion into
the Management Trainee Programme upon successful completion of their studies. In the year under
review, at any given time, there were some 88 graduates progressing through this programme; and
increased use was made of the online learning AB Sugar Campus for new joiners induction and for
targeted technical training, with an average of 31 new users per month registering for courses.
